Her brother was going to be so mad at her. She wasn't supposed to walk home alone in the dark. But she didn't feel like waiting for one of the busboys or cooks to get off, she just wanted to go home. She wanted to get on her typewriter and block out the rest of the world... She untied her apron, pulling out the bundle of notes she had taken before slinging it over her shoulder. She shuffled through the papers, ignoring the world around her. She had learned that if you acted like you didn't care, like you belonged, no one would bother you. Flipping through the notes, she squinted at a line of hurried writing. Did that say "muffin"? "He was trying to muffin up the strength to ask her..." Oh, it was "muster." That made way more sense. She shoved the loose papers into her jeans pocket, forgetting about them for the moment. She couldn't wait to get home. She was gonna change, then maybe eat something, call Elias, play with Heron for a little bit and then... Then, finally, she would sit down on her bed, pull up her type-writer and get lost. In the world of her characters, in their dialogue, dialect, conflict, twists and turns of the inner-machinations of their minds... She couldn't wait. But she had to get home first...

PlayHe jammed to the music that flowed through his ear buds, his body moving in certain patterns, moving down the street. He must look rather strange, doing this. But this was his favorite song. He jumped into the street, dancing to the upbeat rhythm.
"I ain't ever met a man like that. I ain't ever fell so far, so fast. You can turn me on, throw me off track. Boy, you do it, do it, you do it, do it. You're doin' it well.." He was in the zone as Ludacris came blaring into his world.
He walked down the street, busting dance moves left and right. Not much paying attention where he was going--who was around her--nor did he really care. But hey, that was Jude. The song turned and so did the dancing. "And you wanna celebrate but ya don't know what to say.." He hummed softly.
Suddenly he began yelling the chorus in the middle of the street. "Dripped through the hallways cause we started in the shower (Not 99, not 98) We didn't finish 'til we hit the kitchen counter (I'll make love to ya, in 100 ways)!"

Spyra was playing a rousing game of "step on the crack, break your mother's back" when a voice suddenly found her. It was a decidedly male voice, yet it was singing...Jennifer Lopez, if she wasn't mistaken. Huh. She didn't really like that particular song, but her body swayed of its own volition a little. Demons didn't sing Jennifer Lopez, did they?
She came upon one of the only streetlights working at that time. The lone hemisphere of illumination cast enough of a glow for Spyra to see that there was a man dancing in the middle of the street, singing about...well, if she was to take a wild guess, kitchen-sex. Interesting.
Soon enough she recognized that it was the same voice that had been singing Jennifer Lopez earlier. So the kid had just decided to take a moonlit stroll through the hell-torn city so he could sing pop songs at the top of his lungs? Did he have a death-wish or something?
Stopping at the single working streetlight, Spyra leaned against the pole, watching him move a moment. He could be a demon, she guessed. She wasn't really sure what they looked like at all; Elias kept her pretty well-sheltered from all that. "You're gonna get yourself killed!" she shouted to him, hint of laughter at the end of her voice.
Shit. She hadn't meant to do that... Stupid, stupid... That's what Papa was talking about; always acting before thinking. Her brain made the decision and then just went with it, never waited to give the idea some consideration, like how it might get her raped, murdered and eaten...not necessarily in that order.
Well, he had certainly noticed her by now so she might as well just hang loose and wait to see what happened next. Despite the possible danger (or perhaps because of it) Spyra felt her veins spring to life with adrenaline.

"You're gonna get yourself killed!"
He turned, singing softly. "Oooh, I feel loved, I feel loved.." He smirked, Felix running towards him from the shadows, jumping into the air and then barking his way down the street. "I think I'm okay." He laughed back at her, removing the earbuds.
He moved a bit closer, his eyes adjusting to the one light in the entire street. "What about you? Walking around in the dark all alone?" He shook his head. "Perfect damsel in distress." He teased, leaning against a torn mailbox.

"What about you? Walking around in the dark all alone? Perfect damsel in distress."
"I can take care of myself," was Spyra's immediate response. Which was stupid, because she couldn't. She knew how to fight well enough, of course and she could certainly defend herself admirably. But up against a man, someone stronger than her or a demon or something like that? No way. She would get her ass handed to herself.
That's why she kept her trusty bottle of pepper-spray in her bag at all times. Never know when you would need a little extra boost to get some fucker off your back. Good thing her bag was draped over the couch/her bed where she had left it that morning upon leaving the house. Because she was just going to work and then straight back home, so what did she need her whole bag for? Stupid, stupid Spyra...
"Besides," she went on, "we're not in the dark." She gestured up at the streetlight. Clearly Spyra had angered the gods of fate and bad-timing in some past life though, as the streetlight chose that moment to flicker, sputter, dim and then turn off entirely. Fan-fucking-tastic. "Okay, now we're in the dark," she muttered, willing her eyes to adjust to the changed lighting faster.
Attempting to keep up her facade of nonchalance, she turned her head toward the barking, though still keeping in eye on the man. "S'that your dog?" she asked.

"I can take care of myself,"
Was New York packed with these women? Because so far it's been one jackpot after the other. Lena, now this girl? He'd have to work a bit of charm on her, but all in good time. He smiled, nodding softly as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"Besides," she went on, "we're not in the dark... Okay, now we're in the dark,"
He laughed fully at the horrible timing that had taken place. "Not your night is it?" He chuckled, his eyes already adjusting back to the darkness. Somehow he'd grown accustom to it, might have been due to his excessive traveling.
"S'that your dog?"
"Yes." He answered quickly, pushing off the ruined mailbox and walking towards her. "Are you scared?" He asked softly, smiling. "Need that knight in shining armor yet?"

"Not your night is it?"
She tugged on her bangs and sighed. Muttering a quick curse in Greek at her absolute rotten luck, she offered him a shy grin. "Yeah, something like that." Then again, what night was her night, these days? She lifted her foot and tugged the back of her shoe away from her blistered heel. Change of comfortable shoes? Also in her bag at home.
"Are you scared?" She forgot all about the dog as he moved for her. Eyes widening and pupils dilating to catch more light, she pressed her back further into the pole. "Need that knight in shining armor yet?" So, this was hoe she was going to die. Huh. She always thought it would be more interesting, more dramatic. Less cliche than a mugging at night on a broken city street, at least.
"Not scared," she lied convincingly. "And even if I wanted a knight in shining armor --which I totally don't-- I really don't know that you'd be one. You seem more..." She paused, flicking through her mental index of character arch-types. "Brooding, yet attractive mysterious stranger. Charming and charismatic," she ticked off each trait on her fingers. "Unafraid of lurking, potential danger. Good or bad...." she hesitated again, thinking it over. "Undecided," she finally declared, resisting the urge to reach for her pen and a piece of paper so she could scribble down notes. He would be perfect for the story she had started composing in her head half-way through that day's shift.
"So does the self-proclaimed 'knight in shining armor' have a name?" she asked, feeling fear skitter into her heart again. She had gotten lost in her writer-persona and forgotten the shot of fear. Now that she was back in the real world, though...

He wasn't expecting that, that was for sure. He fumbled with words in his mind for a comeback--something to say. The whole time Felix played in the street, making all kinds of noise--barking, knocking into carts and debris..
"So does the self-proclaimed 'knight in shining armor' have a name?"
"Figure you would know." He threw back at her, turning his head and letting out a fierce whistle--watching as the husky came running over before taking a seat beside him. "I mean you did just knock me down in size, right? Or was that some other poor lad I just witnessed?"

"Figure you would know."
She raised an eyebrow, not understanding. Watching as he called his dog, she resisted the urge to drop to her knees and dote on the creature. She loved dogs and this husky was so very pretty. She could never own a one though, that's why she had with Heron. But she knew that they were a good judge of character. Even against their master. And this dog seemed to trust and respect him so that put Spyra at ease a little.
"I mean you did just knock me down in size, right? Or was that some other poor lad I just witnessed?"
"Knock you down in size?" she repeated, rubbing her lips together to keep from grinning. "Not at all. I just said you weren't a knight in shining in armor." She shrugged then, letting her grin out to play. "Really, I would take it as a compliment. The knights in shining armor are always boring, you know? One-dimensional." She didn't know this guy at all but he seemed to have many, many dimensions...
"As for a name..." She dropped her head to the side a little, studying him. "Something simple, but strong. John or Luke..." She made a face then, revising. "Not so biblical. A little less common... Cole, maybe? Finn?" She kept her pensive face on a moment before breaking into soft chuckles. "Well, am I getting warmer?" she teased.

He smirked at himself, having realed her in from just that alone. "Perhaps. But aren't knights the hero? The guy that swoops in, knocks a girl off her feet and risks his life to save hers, or something along those lines?" He paused. "Eh, you're right. I'm no knight, sweetheart."

He shook his head, a smile on his face as he watched her; completely amused. "Not really.." He laughed. "It's Jude." He offered with a grin. "And yourself, sweetheart?"

Spyra smirked to him and scoffed through a laugh. "Yeah, I can tell, sweetheart. Like I said, boring."
"Not really.." He laughed. "It's Jude." He offered with a grin. "And yourself, sweetheart?"
"Jude..." she said, trying it out on her tongue. "Jude. I like it," she said, smiling. "Spyradoula," she answered. Then she hastened to add, "But just stick with Spyra. I curse my thoroughly Greek parents for the mouthful that is 'Spyradoula.'" Plus it was just a weird name, let alone cumbersome.
"And what's this guy's name?" she asked, gesturing softly to the dog.

"Yeah, I can tell, sweetheart. Like I said, boring."
"Oh, sweetheart, I'm far from boring." He grinned, perking a brow at her. He was a shameless flirt-scary how it came so easy to him. Girls just turned to puty in his hands. It was great--but he had a feeling he'd have to work a little harder to get this one.
"Jude..." she said, trying it out on her tongue. "Jude. I like it," she said, smiling. "Spyradoula," she answered. Then she hastened to add, "But just stick with Spyra. "Spyra.." He gave a nod. " Definitely authentic, eh?" He smirked. "Hey atleast you didn't say what half the girls say when I tell them my name." He laughed, nodding his head down to the dog. "That's Felix, the oh so charming-first mate-demon attractor-Husky." He smirked.
"So.. Spyra." He leaned in. "What are you doing out here all alone in the dark with a guy who's no knight?" He asked, perking a brow.

"Oh, sweetheart, I'm far from boring."
Spyra bit her lower lip, smiling a little. Her hands gripped the pole behind her, nails running over the metal. "Yeah, I'll just bet..." He was good. Spyra had known a lot of boys and men in her life, what with cousins and brothers and all their friends sifting in and out of her house when she was younger. She had know quite a few smooth-talker; Jude was definitely one of them. But she wasn't that easy, not at all.
"Spyra.." He gave a nod. " Definitely authentic, eh?" She scoffed a little, nodding. "Got that right." "Hey atleast you didn't say what half the girls say when I tell them my name." Spyra furrowed her brow before realization settled over her. "Hey Jude," she sang softly. "Don't make it bad...." She broke into giggles at that though and didn't go on.
"That's Felix, the oh so charming-first mate-demon attractor-Husky." He smirked. Spyra smiled down at the dog. "Felix, huh?" She danced her fingers toward the dog. "Is Felix friendly?" she wondered outloud.
"What are you doing out here all alone in the dark with a guy who's no knight?" Spyra shrugged, grinning to him. "Just walking home from work," she answered, glancing to the side as if she wasn't that interested. Which she wasn't. Really... Okay, not really.

"Yeah, I'll just bet..."
Well, game on. Spyra: one. Jude: love. "Mhm." He hummed, Felix turning to lick at his fingers. "Hey Jude," she sang softly. "Don't make it bad...." He chuckled softly, ruffling Felix's fur. "Exactly."
"Felix, huh?" She danced her fingers toward the dog. "Is Felix friendly?"
"I know I am." He grinned. Oh yes, he was good. "But yes, Felix is friendly." He smirked, Felix turned, sniffing at Spyra before giving her hand a lick. "Just walking home from work," He gave a nod. "I'm surprised places are still open.." He muttered with a shrug. "Well, I could do the knightly thing and walk you home--but, like you stated--I'm no knight." He smiled.
He turned, acting as if he was going to leave. Come on.. reel me back in..

"I know I am." She met his eyes at that, smirked softly. Oh, they were gonna play it that way, huh? She just shook her head, chuckling a little. What a line. At Felix's lick Spyra giggled, his rough tongue tickling her fingers. "Yes, Felix is very friendly," she cooed to the dog. She petted his head gently, emjoying the silky feel of his fur.
"I'm surprised places are still open..." She shrugged neutrally. "People gotta eat," she reasoned. And she needed a paycheck.
"Well, I could do the knightly thing and walk you home--but, like you stated--I'm no knight."
Watching him move to go, she knew it was a play. Deciding to have a little fun with this, she crouched down, playing at ignoring him. Rubbing at Felix's ears, she said, "Your master think he's smooth huh, Felix? He thinks I'm just gonna fall over myself to try to find some way to get him walk me home." Which, of course, this was her way of doing just that. She glanced from the dog up to Jude, shooting him a knowing grin. "Isn't that right?"

"People gotta eat,"
People gotta fuck too. He thought, chewing on the inside of his cheek. He shook his head, waiting for the moment she called his name--called him back for more. Any second now.. "Your master think he's smooth huh, Felix? He thinks I'm just gonna fall over myself to try to find some way to get him walk me home."
He closed his eyes, sighing deeply. Realizing that Felix wasn't at his side, he let out a soft whistle. "Come on boy." He called, tapping at his leg. "Isn't that right?" He stopped, and turned just as Felix reached his side.
"And what's so wrong with a little smooth talking and flirting?" He shot back at her. "Especially in times like these." He perked a brow, crossing his arms over his chest.

She straightened up as Felix moved back to his side. She put her hands to her sides, leaning back to stretch. She met his eyes as he turned to her, letting the moment linger between them. He spoke soon though, breaking it. "And what's so wrong with a little smooth talking and flirting?" He shot back at her. "Especially in times like these."
She smiled back softly. "Nothing wrong with that; nothing. Maybe I'm just not into playing games though." She raised an eyebrow, shrugging one shoulder. Taking careful steps, she moved to him. "Don't need to complicate things further, right?" She grinned wider, holding back soft laughter. "Especially in times like these."
Her hand drifted down to stroke over Felix's back, nudging against Jude's hand softly as well.

Huh.. no games huh? His mouth went skewed slightly as he thought. "But wouldn't you think it'd be best to lighten things up with a game or two; in times like these?" He shot back at her with a soft smile as she went to pet Felix, her hand brushing against his.
Just what is she getting at? He thought, looking over at her. He had plenty of other moves hidden up his sleeve. Why not just pull out another? Shock her a little? Nothing wrong with a little fun, right? He smiled softly.
In one smooth move, he grasped her hand and pulled her close--inches from his face. "What do you think now?"

"But wouldn't you think it'd be best to lighten things up with a game or two; in times like these?"
She considered that a moment. She had never been fond of playing games of this nature. She'd rather just tell it straight and move on from there. But he did have a point. What was the harm in a little flirting when the world was falling apart around them? Slowly, a steady grin found her face and she laughed once. "I guess...maybe you're right," she said, as if it was surprising her to hear it as well.
Then suddenly his face was barely a second from hers. Her eyes widened and her mouth parted reflexively. "What do you think now?" She was at a loss for words for a minute, eyes just looking into his. "I... I think you sure as hell aren't a knight in shining armor and I like you that way." With that, she pressed a firm kiss to his lips, pulling back after not even a second.
Shooting him a cocky grin, she took a few steps forward. Stopping, she looked over her shoulder at him. "Y'know. I've heard that sometimes the brooding, yet attractive mysterious stranger can sometime escorts the damsel in distress home." She shrugged as if she were being casual, but her eyes shone with playfulness. "In case you're interested..."
He had to be interested.

"I... I think you sure as hell aren't a knight in shining armor and I like you that way."
And then--a kiss. Or, her version of kiss, he guessed. "Um.." He still held her there, a smile on his face. "What the hell was that?" He asked, laughing softly. She broke free a moment later, walking away slightly. Leaving him there--wondering.
"Y'know. I've heard that sometimes the brooding, yet attractive mysterious stranger can sometime escorts the damsel in distress home." She shrugged as if she were being casual, but her eyes shone with playfulness. "In case you're interested..."
"Hmm." He crossed his arms over his chest. "I need some time to think that over--to be sure. Y'know." He grinned. Felix barked softly, running in a circle before taking off towards Spyra. "Seems he likes you." He said softly. "Can't blame him, kinda fond of you myself."
