[[Okay, so I took a bunch of liberties with this, obviously, but I hope you all enjoy anyway. ^^]]
Thinking back, it had all started when she was fourteen. She was over Regan’s house, as per usual. Maura practically lived at the Winchester’s house and when she wasn’t over there, Regan was at her house. The same went for Oliver and Logan. This particular late-summer day, both the Lawrence teens were over the Winchester’s. The girls were in Regan’s room, anxiously discussing the fact that they would be starting high school the next month. Both their parents had decided against sending them to Biella or Rosewood for schooling. They had grown up around the mutant homes and Dean, Harmony, Cian and Emma all thought it would be good for them to experience a little bit of the outside world.
Both girls were suitably nervous and excited. They weren’t going to some public school at least; they would be attending Kesley Academy. At the moment, they were attempting to find some way to jazz up the rather boring uniforms of washed-out blue and grey. Just as Maura was going to suggest something to do with the tie, a burst of noise erupted from the front room. The two girls exchanged glances before making a run for the door.
At that moment, four teenaged boys dashed past Regan’s room, all laughing and shouting happily. Oliver and Logan had been at the head of the group. Maura watched her brother duck around the corner, followed by the rest of his friends. “What’s going on?” she asked Regan, wide grin on her face.
“Dunno,” Regan replied, smiling just as brightly. “Lo must have a bunch of friends over or something.”
The girls exchanged a glance and without saying a word decided to crash the party. Giggling, they tore from Regan’s room out to the den, where the boys had headed.
Logan was sprawled in the arm chair, video game controller in his hands. Oliver was on the couch nearby, the other boys lined up with him. All eight eyes were fixed on the screen, watching as the game started up.
“What’re you doing?” Regan asked, sounding innocent.
“Nothing. Go away.”
“Aw, Lo-Lo,” Maura whined out. “Don’t be that way. Whatcha guys playing?”
“Don’t call me ‘Lo-Lo,’” was all Logan said but he smiled her way, looking up from the television for a moment. "Space Invaders,” one of the other boys answered, shooting a smile to Maura. She returned it, loving the attention. She also stuck her tongue out at Logan playfully. Something about older guys…
“Space Invaders,” Regan echoed. “Dude, Mo’s the best at that game.”
Oliver woke up at that, pointing a strict finger in his sister’s direction. “No. No way. You are not playing. You always beat everyone in two seconds and then the whole game in like five minutes. No way.”
Maura giggled and shrugged. “What? I can’t help it if I kick ass at something.”
“Don’t say ‘ass,’” Oliver chided, side-stepping her remark. “You’re too young to curse.”
“And Kyenne’s too young to be in your room without Mum and Da knowing but that still happened, huh?”
While Oliver looked like he was going to kill his sister, Logan passed him an impressed look. “Dude. Essence’s kid? Isn’t she like thirteen?”
“Shut up,” Oliver replied through gritted teeth. He pretended to be engrossed in the game, pressing buttons furiously but his cheeks were flaming.
Regan laughed happily and shook her head. “Like you can even talk, Logan.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Regan sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes. Looking to Maura she said, “Boys.”
“I know,” Maura replied with a long-suffering look.
“No, really. What’s that mean?”
“You can’t tease Oliver for cradle-robbing! Like you haven’t got it even worse for Mo.”
Maura blushed brightly at that, almost as bad as her brother a moment ago. She shook out her blond hair to cover her burning cheeks. The other two boys meanwhile were laughing along with Regan.
“Shut the hell up,” Logan told his sister, trying to act as if he didn’t care.
“Wait, what?” Oliver asked, looking from his sister to his best friend and back again. When he got no response from either of them, he turned to Regan. “T’hell?”
Regan giggled and shrugged. “Please. Like you haven’t noticed, Ollie? My brother is into your sister.”
“Ree, shut up,” Maura pleaded in an undertone. She glanced to Logan. He was blushing with his head ducked. “Let’s go try to
figure those uniforms out, huh?”
Regan chuckled, shaking her head. “Oblivious. All right, let’s go.” She let her friend tug her back to her room, shooting a wink to Oliver and blowing a kiss to her brother.
Once back inside Regan’s room, Maura collapsed on her bed. “Ree, Christ.”
“What?”
Maura groaned and sat up on her elbows. “Really? What the hell was that about?”
“Oh, c’mon. You’re just as into him as he’s into you. I’m sick of neither of you realizing or admitting it.”
“You’re damaged,” Maura declared, glaring at her.
“Please. You think I don’t realize the way you two are always looking at each other? The way he always finds a way to hold your hand? Give you a piggy-back ride? How you always managed to touch his hair? Give him a hug? You too are totally obvious. Except to each other. And, apparently, your brother. I mean, hell, even our parents have figured it out! Why do you think our dads always joke about finally becoming real family?”
“I thought that was some old joke from before us,” Maura admitted a little dazed.
“No, Mo. They already think you and Logan are destined to get married, have tons of kids and live happily ever after.”
“Whatever.”
“You can’t still be denying it,” Regan said exasperated.
“Yeah, I can be!” Maura rose then, pacing a bit. “I mean, if I’m so in love with Logan, why have I had so many other boyfriends? And, for that matter, why has he had so many girlfriends if he’s so head-over-heels for me?”
Regan scoffed as if her friend had just asked her what one plus one equaled. “Because you fell for him before he did for you. You were probably like twelve, at least that’s when I realized it. And by then Logan, at sixteen, had a lot of girlfriends already. You saw him collecting girls and thought if he could have a good time, why couldn’t you? And then once Logan caught on that he liked you, he got jealous of all the guys you were dating and started dating more himself to get you jealous.”
Maura paused for a minute, just blinking at Regan. “Ree… That has got to be the most fucked up logic I’ve ever heard.”
“Oh? Then how come whenever you brought a boy to a family thing, Logan was suddenly your best and closest friend.”
“We’re always close,” Maura replied.
Regan rolled her eyes. “Yeah. But not like this. Every time you’ve been with a boy and Logan was around he’s been like…possessive of you. Not really obviously, but enough that the other guy understood that you belong to him.”
“I do not belong to your brother!” Maura stated indignantly.
“Whatever,” Regan drawled. “You know what I mean. I’m done with this. Let’s hit Micky D’s; I’d kill for a Big Mac.”
Maura sighed but rose and followed her friend out of the house. They were waiting for the light to change at a crosswalk when Regan got her final comment in. “Oh, and would you mind doing something about it soon? It’s, like, killing me watching you two dance around each other.”
Maura just nodded mutely and followed her friend across the street. Logan liked her? And she liked Logan? Her and Logan together? As her Aunt Andrua was fond of saying, yikes stripes. This was a mess.
