Essence was not the world's best cook. She was certainly not Suzie Homemaker... But she could make it work. Between calls to her mother and the internet, she had set-up a pretty damn good meal, if she said so herself. Everything looked really great and the table was set. And she was not nervous.
Okay, she was but she had no clue why. If anything, Novalee should be the nervous one. She was the one bringing her boyfriend to meet her brother and his fiancee and child (that she barely knew, by the way). Novalee should be the nervous one, not her. But still. Essence just really liked people to like her. And she didn't know what this girl would think of her and they had only met each other once and... She sighed softly, and rubbed at her temples.
She was such a freak. Clearing her throat, she sighed one last time before moving from the dining room into the living room, settling onto the couch to wait for everything to begin. Her toes played in the soft carpet, shoes off to the side. Ryder was upstairs, getting himself and KyKy dressed and ready. The house was eerie quiet; she didn't like it. Usually she had either Ryder, Kyenne or both of them near her. She wasn't a loner; Essence liked people, liked being around people.
Sighing, she shook her head and rolled her eyes at herself. Bradbury padded up to her then, sniffing at her fingers. Chuckling, Essence lifted her hand and petted Bradbury's head softly. "Whatcha think, Brad?" she asked. "Ready to meet Novalee for real? And her boyfriend?"

Taking a deep breath she held River's hand sqeezing softly. She had barely talked the whole ride here. She had never really hung out with her brother other then a couple times when she first got here. They kept in touch and what not, but they were never really this chummy. This dinner was not really something they had ever did. That and they were going to meet the love of her life. River. She felt her hand shaking a bit as she looked at the door. "Well are you ready to meet the only family I have in New York?" She grinned brightly reaching out to knock on the door. She looked at River not wanting to anticipate the door opening. "Save me if I start to embarrass myself?" She giggled. Nova wanted to be closer to her brother and his family. His daughter was so cute, and she wanted to know her. To actually be the little girls' aunt. She wanted to be friends with Essence. Share funny stories about the men in their lives. She let a sigh of nervousness out. It seemed like it was taking forever for the door to be answered. Of course she wanted her only family to meet her boyfriend. He was one of the only things she was proud of about. He was so good to her, and she couldn't have possibly asked for anyone better for her. She loved him with all the love in her heart. It was time for people other than the strangers on the street to see just how much she loved him.

To say that River was nervous was an understatement. The situation they were in was...not the normal type. Sure, thousands of little sisters had brought their boyfriends how to big brothers all over the world. But he was sure that none of those people had the family dynamic of the Forresters. It wasn't that they didn't get along... They just didn't know each other very well. So yeah, River had to worry about potential awkwardness aside from the usual meeting-the-family stuff. But in a way he was excited as well.
Novalee had told him a bit about her brother and his family and they seemed like decent enough people. Plus, there was a baby and River was killer with kids. Also, it would just be nice to meet Novalee's relatives. It said something about their relationship -- that they really weren't just fooling around. Not that he had ever thought they had been; not for a second.
"Well are you ready to meet the only family I have in New York?" River nodded, smiling back to her and squeezing her hand lightly. "Save me if I start to embarrass myself?" He chuckled at that, shaking his head. "You'll be fine, darlin'," he assured her. And she would be, honest. Novalee could charm the paint off a wall. He was sure it might be a little awkward, but overall a positive experience.
He ducked his head close to hers, dropping a soft, chaste kiss to her lips before straightening up again. "It'll just be a fun, relaxin' evening," he said with a smile, reassuring himself as much as he was her.

Kyenne was giggling as she laid on the bed, trying to stretch her foot to her mouth as Ry through on his jeans and shoes. She began rolling then and he had to stop everything he was doing and straighten her up. " Hold on." He laughed, making a pillow fortress around her. " There we go, Daddy fixed it." He smiked, leaning in and kissing her cheek, making her giggle. Standing straight, he pulled his shirt on, spraying a mist of colgne on himself before looking through her dresser drawers for an outfit. " How about we match?" He asked, looking back at her. " I'll wear blue stripes... and you can wear the pink." He smiled, grabbing the items and closing the door. " Mommy can put on your shoes." He told her grunting slightly as he picked her up and managed to get back off the bed. " Daddy's getting old." He sighed out straightening himself up and walking out the bedroom door. Kyenne through her arms about, wanting to be free and in her walker. " Hold on." He laughed, bouncing her back on his hip. Mmm, whatever was cooking sure smelled good. He reached the bottom of the stairs and was about to yell to Essence about the food, when there was a knock on the door. " I got it." He called out. " Mmmah![/i]" Kyenne followed closely behind. He laughed softly, grabbing the knob and pulling it open. His smile widened as he saw Novalee and... her boyfriend standing there. " Hey." He smiled, wrapping an arm around her and hugging her to his side. He wanted them to be close, and it seemed since Ky came along, he'd been beyond happy. Her boyfriend was another thing. But He wasn't one to judge a book by it's cover. He waved them inside. " Come on in." He laughed softly. " Ess, baby. They're here." He called out to her as Kyenne wiggled in his arms.

There was a knock at the door and Essence took in a breath, sitting up to stand. Just as she rose though, Ryder called that he had the door. And judging from the little-girl vocalization after that, he also had Kyenne with him. She chuckled at that, tapping Bradbury on the nose. "Here we go, huh?" she murmured to her fox. Heading out, she had Bradbury on her heels and she was just breaking into the foyer when Ryder called back to her, "Ess, baby. They're here."
"I can see that," she giggled, coming up behind him. Grinning, she dropped a soft hand to his shoulder and moved to take Novalee into a hug as the girl came into the house, followed by her boyfriend. "It's good to see you again, Nova," she offered along with a grin before turning to the boy. "And you must be River." She smiled, "It's nice to meet you too."
Bradbury sniffed a circle around Novalee before recognizing her scent and moving onto River. Smirking at the failing hold that Ryder had on Kyenne, Essence put a hand to his elbow. "Want me to take that off your hands, dude?" she questioned with a laugh in her voice.
